Procedure
Cs2CO3 (996 mg, 3.06 mmol) was added to a solution of 2-chloro-1H-indole-3-carbaldehyde (0.5 g, 2.78 mmol) and benzene sulfonyl chloride (0.39 mL, 3.06 mmol) in DMF (5 mL) and the mixture heated to 60° C. After 3 h the mixture was diluted with brine and extracted with EtOAc. The combined extracts were dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography to afford 2-chloro-1-(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-indole-3-carbaldehyde (33 mg, 5%) as a white solid.
