A mixture of 3-nitropyridine-2,4-diol (1.63 g, 10.44 mmol, Alfa Aesar, Ward Hills, Mass.) and palladium on carbon (10%, wet; 1.2 g, 10 mmol) in EtOAc (52.2 ml) was stirred at RT under H2 (50 psi) for 22 h. The mixture was filtered through a pad of Celite and was washed with MeOH to give 3-aminopyridine-2,4-diol (179b, 44% yield) as a brown, amorphous solid. MS (ESI, pos. ion) m/z: 127.2 (M+1).
