A mixture of 3,4-diamino-2-chloropyridine (2.1 g, 14.63 mmol) (Sigma Aldich) and pyruvic acid (1.22 mL, 17.55 mmol) (Acros, New Jersey) in MeOH (40 mL) in a sealed glass tube was heated at 50° C. for 2 h. The mixture was cooled to RT and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was triturated with ether and the suspension was filtered to give 1.88 g of crude product. MS (ESI, pos. ion) m/z: 196.1 (M+1).
