Sertraline hydrochloride (5 grams) was dissolved in water (one liter). To this solution the required amount of 1N NaOH was added until the pH of the solution was adjusted to 8.0. The resulting solids were filtered and washed with deionized water (50 mL per gram of solid). The solids were dried at 40° C. in a vacuum oven for 48 hours. The yield was 98%. mp 67° C.
