Procedure
Methyl 4-dodecylsulfonylbenzoate (5), (approximately 63.43 mMole) was suspended in methanol (100 mL), and 85%-potassium hydroxide (10.5 g, 64.67 mMole) in water (20 mL) added. The mixture was heated to 50-60° C. for 15 minutes during which time the solid went into solution. The solution was then cooled and added to ice cold 2N-HCl (1 L). The white solid was filtered off, washed with water, then methanol and finally air-dried to give 15.0 g of 4-dodecylsulfonylbenzoic acid.
