A solution comprised of ethyl 2-acetyl-4-methylpentanoate (1.86 gm, 10 mmol) in chloroform (20 mL) was cooled to 0° C. and treated with bromine (0.6 mL, 11.0 mmol in 10 mL chloroform). The mixture was stirred for approximately 12 hours and then concentrated to provide ethyl 2-bromoacetyl-4-methylpentanoate as a crude product.
