Procedure

To a solution of 4-(2-methylphenyl)-3-(4pyridyl)-3-butene-2-one (step 1) (1.0 g, 4.2 mmol) in methyl alcohol (18 ml), a solution of H2O2 (30% by wt.) (0.95 g, 8.4 mmol) and sodium hydroxide (0.18 g, 4.6 mmol) in water (4 ml) was-added. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 70 hours. After methyl alcohol was removed, water (25 ml) and ethyl acetate (100 ml) were added and the two phase mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. The layers were separated, and the aqueous layer was washed with ethyl acetate (100 ml). The combined organic layer was dried with Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give an oil. 4-(2-Methylphenyl)-3-(4-pyridyl)-3,4-epoxy-2-butanone was isolated from the oil residue by chromatography.
