Procedure
To a solution of ethyl 4-chloro-2-methylthiopyrimidine-5-carboxylate (Aldrich, 20 g, 86 mmol) in 250 mL of DCM at 0° C. was slowly added a solution of methylamine in EtOH (33%, 35 mL 281 mmol). After stirring for 30 minutes, water (150 mL) was added and the phases were separated. The organic phase was dried (MgSO4) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure to give 19 g of the ethyl 4-methylamino-2-methylthiopyrimidine-5-carboxylate as a white solid. Step B.: Preparation of 4-methylamino-2-methylthiopyrimidine-5-methanol
