A mixture of 200 g. (0.826 mole) of 3-benzyloxy-benzene-2-propanol in 50 ml. of hexane and 1 1. of concentrated hydrochloric acid is shaken for 15 minutes in a 2 1. separatory funnel. The organic layer is removed and washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate. The neutralized organic extract is dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to give a quantitative yield of the title compound as an oil.
