Reaction Steps

To a refluxing solution of 1.6 g. of trans-N-octyl-2-(4-aminophenyl)cyclopropanecarboxamide in 30 ml. of benzene was added 598 mg. of maleic anhydride all at once. Refluxing was continued for 10 minutes, and then the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was recrystallized twice from ethanol to give 930 mg. of the title compound as a white solid, m.p. 178.5°-179.5° C. The IR spectrum (KBr disc) showed absorptions at 3280, 2925, 1725, 1640 and 1550 cm-1.
