Procedure
20.3 g of anhydrous iron (III) chloride (0.124 mol) was dissolved in 30 g of demineralised water with gentle warming. To this was added 45 ml of ammonia solution (SG. 0.880). The mixture was then heated on a steam bath for 30 minutes. The precipitate of iron (III) hydroxide was filtered and washed free of chloride. The moist iron (III) hydroxide and 60 g of acetylacetone (0.6 mol) were mixed together and heated for 30 minutes. Crystals of Fe(acac)3 were deposited and were recrystallised from ethanol.
