To a cold (0° C.) solution of 6,7-dihydro-5H-benzocycloheptene (0.915 g, 6.35 mmol) in methylene chloride (20 ml) was added 75% meta-chloro-peroxybenzoic acid (1.75 g, 7.63 mmol). The reaction mixture was allowed to come to room temperature over an 18 hour period. The reaction mixture was diluted with methylene chloride and washed with saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated to give the epoxide as a colorless oil (1.16 g, >100% yield, contaminated with meta-chlorobenzoic acid).
