A stirred mixture of hexafluoroacetone (235 g) and 3-methylbut-1-ene (100 g) was heated at 125° C. under a pressure of 17 atmospheres for a period of 20 hours. Distillation of the product mixture under reduced pressure yielded 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-6,6,6-trifluoro-5-trifluoromethylhex-2-ene as a mobile colorless liquid, b.p. 43° C./ 15 mm Hg.
