Procedure

13.7 ml of methanesulphonic acid chloride are added dropwise, over a period of approximately 30 minutes, while stirring at 0° to 5° C., to a solution of 21.1 g of 2-hydroxymethyl-6-methyl-1,4-dioxan, 15.2 g of pyridine and 0.6 g of 4-dimethylaminopyridine in 80 ml of dichloromethane. After stirring for a further 18 hours at room temperature, the reaction mixture is extracted repeatedly with 1N hydrochloric acid and then washed with water until neutral. After the organic phase, which has been separated off, has been dried over sodium sulphate and the solvent has been distilled off completely, the title compound of formula ##STR55## is obtained. The 1H-proton resonance spectrum corresponds to this structure; nD22 =1.4607.
