9-Oxoxanthene-4,5-dicarboxylic acid which is prepared by potassium permanganate oxidation of the corresponding 4,5-dimethylxanthen-9-one [M. Schopff, Ber. 25, 3647 (1892)]49 is reduced to xanthene-4,5-dicarboxylic acid by a Wolff-Kishner reduction (N. Ishikawa, Yuki Gose: Kagaku Kyokai Shi 17, 553-6 (1959); CA 54:450]. The xanthene dicarboxylic acid derivative is converted to xanthene-4,5-dipiperidide by conventional procedures.
