Procedure

A solution of 1'-benzyl-1,3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-5-methoxy-3-phenylspiro[isobenzofuran-1,4'-piperidine] (prepared by method of Example 1), methanol, and a catalytic amount of methanolic hydrogen chloride is heated under reflux, cooled, made basic with sodium hydroxide, and diluted with water. The mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate, and the ethyl acetate solution is dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to a solid. Recrystallization from acetone-water provides colorless crystals, m.p. 129°-133°.
