Under a nitrogen atmosphere, a stirred solution of 1.8 grams (0.007 mole) of 2-amino-3-cyano-5-iodo-4-methylpyridine, 2.3 grams (0.007 mole) of (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-3-benzofuranon-4-yl)trimethyltin (prepared in Step D of this Example), and 0.5 gram (catalyst) of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) in 25 mL of toluene is heated at reflux for about 22 hours. After this time the reaction mixture is cooled to ambient temperature and diluted with 50 mL of ethyl acetate. The mixture is filtered through diatomaceous earth, and the filtrate is concentrated under reduced pressure to a residue. The residue is purified using column chromatography, yielding 2-amino-3-cyano-4-methyl-5-(2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-3-benzofuranon-4yl)pyridine.
