A 3-benzoylpyrrole of the formula ##STR28## in potassium hydroxide or other suitable base is reacted with hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid to yield a 1-amino-3-benzoylpyrrole of the formula ##STR29## This reaction typically takes place in the presence of a suitable solvent such as dimethylformamide at a temperature of about 0° to 25° C. (or at room temperature) for 0.5 to 4 hours.
