Procedure
A 150 ml jacketed glass reactor was equipped with a thermocouple, magnetic stirrer, feed and sample ports, and an overhead condenser. The reactor was maintained under positive N2 atmosphere by connecting the condenser vent line to a N2 bubbler. Fifty ml (46.5 grams) of mesityl oxide heavy ends from the current MIBK process (the reaction medium for the dehydration reaction step), which contained the H2SO4 catalyst, was added to the reactor.
