Procedure

The aniline derivative was dissolved in 10% H2SO4 (2 ml) under ice cooling, followed by addition of an aqueous solution (0.5 ml) of sodium nitrite (50 mg), and the temperature of the resulting solution was raised up to room temperature for subsequent stirring for 20 hours. The solution was neutralized with an aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, and the mixture was extracted twice with methylene chloride. The organic phase was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column (methylene chloride:methanol=99:1 to 98:2), to give the title compound (55 mg; 41%). The purity of the compound was 100 % by HPLC.
