Procedure
Butyllithium in tetrahydrofuran (2.6 M, 0.04 mol) was added slowly to a solution of 5-chloro-3-[N-(2,2-dimethoxyethyl)-N-methyl(aminomethyl)]benzo[b]-thiophene (10 g, 0.033 mol) in freshly distilled tetrahydrofuran (100 ml) stirred at -30° C. under argon. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes, treated with dry carbon dioxide for 5 minutes and allowed to warm to 25° C. The mixture was treated with methanol, poured into ice water and extracted with ethyl ether. The aqueous phase was adjusted to pH 7.5 and extracted with methylene chloride. The organic phase was washed with water, dried with magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give 6.0 g (54%) of 5-chloro-3-[N-(2,2-dimethoxyethyl)-N-methyl-(aminomethyl)]benzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid.
