Procedure
A mixture of 2 parts of 2chloroacetonitrile, 8 parts of 1-[(5-methyl-2-furanyl)methyl]-N-(4-piperidinyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-amine, 3.1 parts of sodium carbonate and 90 parts of N,N-dimethylformamide was stirred and heated overnight at 45° C. The reaction mixture was poured into water and the product was extracted with dichloromethane. The extract was dried, filtered and evaporated. The residue was crystallized from a mixture of acetonitrile and 2,2'-oxybispropane, yielding 7.3 parts (80.4%) of 4-[[1-[(5-methyl-2-furanyl)methyl]-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl]-amino]-1-piperidineacetonitrile; mp. 177.3° C. (int. 36).
