Procedure
A stirred solution of the aldehyde from (c) (0.24 g, lmmol) and 4-toluenesulphonic acid hydrate (0.21 g, 1.1 mmol) and ethane-1,2-diol (0.5 ml, 8 mmol) in dichloromethane (8 ml) was heated at reflux through a Dean-Stark trap containing 4A molecular sieves for 6 hours. After standing at 25° C. for 70 hours the mixture was washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate and evaporated to a yellow solid.
