Procedure
To a solution of p-cyanobenzaldehyde (0.84 g, 6.4 mM) and 2,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-3(2H)-furanone (1.0 g, 5.3 mM) in ethanol (50 mL), was added 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide (0.5 mL, 0.5 mm). The reaction solution was stirred at room temperature for two days. Then, saturated aqueous sodium chloride (200 mL) was added. The aqueous layer was extracted with diethyl ether (3×100 mL). The combined ethereal extracts were washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride (50 mL), dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to give a beige solid. The crude product was recrystallized from ethanol to afford a yellow solid (671 mg, 42% yield), m.p. 187°-188° C.
