α1 -[[(1,1-Dimethylethyl)amino]methyl]-4-hydroxy-1,3-benzenedimethanol (5.8 g) is dissolved in deionized water (8 ml) containing concentrated sulfuric acid (0.68 ml). The solution is stirred for 60 minutes, treated with ethanol (60 ml), stirred for 18 hours, treated with a further portion of ethanol (60 ml) and the title compound (3.35 g) isolated by filtration as a white powder.
