Palladium-on-carbon (5% w/w, 0.24 g.) was added to a solution of indazole (U) (0.48 g.) in ethyl acetate (25 ml.). The mixture was hydrogenated at 1.1 bars for 3 hours. The catalyst was removed by filtration through diatomaceous earth, and the filtrate evaporated. The residue was recrystallized from a hot ethyl acetate/petroleum ether mixture to give methyl 4-(6-amino-3-methoxyindazol-1-ylmethyl)-3-methoxybenzoate (S) (0.15 g., 34%), as a pale-yellow solid, m.p. 188°-193° C.
