A solution of 26.5 g of ethyl glyoxylate in 180 ml of methylene chloride was added dropwise over 10 minutes to a solution of 84 g of ferric chloride in 180 ml of methylene chloride and after stirring for one hour, the mixture was cooled to -20° C. A solution of 34 g of the product of Step A in 180 ml of methylene chloride was added dropwise over 20 minutes and the mixture was stirred for one hour at -20° C. and then was poured into 300 ml of iced water. The mixture was extracted with methylene chloride and the organic phase was washed with 2N hydrochloric acid, then with aqueous sodium chloride, dried and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to obtain 56.5 g of the expected product melting at 68° C. after purification by chromatography on silica and elution with a 6-4 ethyl acetate-cyclohexane mixture.
