Procedure
3,4-Dihydroxy-5-sulfobenzoic acid, monopotassium salt (10.0 g, 36.7 mmoles) was slurried in 300 ml of dry methanol, cooled to 0° C., and treated for five minutes with dry hydrogen chloride. The resulting solution was allowed to warm to room temperature and was stirred for 48 hours. The mixture was filtered and the volatile materials were removed in vacuo. The resulting solid was dried in vacuo at 60° C. to give the title compound, 8.51 g, m.p. 116° C.
