Procedure
3,4-Dihydroxy-5-sulfobenzoic acid, methyl ester (15.0 g, 52.9 mmoles) was dissolved in 100 ml of hydrazine hydrate and refluxed for 15 hours. The mixture was then evaporated in vacuo, the residue dissolved in water and the pH adjusted to 1.0 with 2N hydrochloric acid. The mixture was chilled at 0° C. for 15 hours and the white precipitate which formed was filtered and dried to give 12.83 g of the title compound as a white solid, m.p >300° C.
