A stirred solution of 2-[(1,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-2H-isoindol-2-yl)oxy]-2-methylpropanoic acid, 2-[(1,1-dimethylethoxy)carbonyl]-1-methylhydrazide (7.10 g, 19 mmole) in 50 ml of dichloromethane at 0° C. was treated dropwise with hydrazine hydrate (1.80 ml, 38 mmole). After 30 minutes the resulting slurry was filtered and the filtrate evaporated. The residue was crystallized from ether/petroleum ether to give the title compound as 3.3 g of a colorless solid, m.p. 85°-90° C.
