To a stirred solution of 2(S)-t-Butyloxycarbonylamino-1-cyclohexyl-3(R)-hydroxy-6-methylheptan-4-one (200 mg, 0.586 mmol) in THF (10 mL) was added NaBH4 (22 mg, 0.586 mmol). After 2 hours, the solvent was evaporated and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and brine. The organic phase was washed (brine), dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated. The residue was recrystallized from methylcyclohexane to give 76 mg (38%) of the desired product. M.p. 130°-131° C. The mother liquor was chromatographed (silica gel, ether/hexane) to afford 43 mg (21%) more.
