Procedure

110 g of 7-mercapto-5-methylpyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine-3-carboxylic acid were heated to reflux temperature for 2.5 hours in 500 ml of 20 percent hydrochloric acid. The reaction mixture was cooled, the product was filtered off under suction and then recrystallized from water/ethanol at a pH of 6. There was obtained 5-methylpyrazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidine-7-thiol as yellow crystals of a melting point above 250°.
