Procedure
44.4 g (0.316 mol) of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde and 40 5 g (0.316 mol) of 3,3,4-trimethyl-pentan-2-one are dissolved in a mixture of 100 ml of ethanol and 10 ml of water, and a solution of 0.9 g of sodium hydroxide in 10 ml of water is added. The mixture is initially stirred for 1 hour at room temperature, then 0.4 g of solid sodium hydroxide is added and the mixture is stirred for a further 16 hours. The precipitate which results is filtered off with suction and then washed with water. 33.1 g (42% of theory) of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4,5-trimethyl-1-hexen-3-one are obtained in the form of a low melting, oily-crystalline product. ##STR24##
