Procedure
3 g of (R)-(+)-2-amino-3-phenylpropanol and 1.8 g of ethylene carbonate in 50 ml toluene in a round bottom flask equipped with a Dean-Stark trap was refluxed for 24 hrs. The reaction mixture was poured into ethyl acetate/water mixture and the aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic extracts were washed with water, followed by brine, dried and concentrated. Kugelrohr distillation at 150°-160° C./0.5 mm Hg provided 2.75 g (75%) of an oil.
