Procedure

To a stirred and resulting mixture of 136 parts of 1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone and 222 parts of 1,3-dibromopropane in 500 parts of water was added dropwise a solution of 40 parts of sodium hydroxide in 140 parts of water. Upon completion, stirring was continued at reflux temperature overnight. The organic layer was separated, dried and distilled, yielding 80 parts of 1[2-(3-bromopropoxy)phenyl]ethanone; bp. 135° C. at 0.05 mm. pressure (intermediate 77).
