Procedure
1,4-Di-O-actyl-β-L-cladinose (2.18 g) was dissolved in 0.1N aqueous hydrochloric acid (245 mL) and the mixture was allowed to remain at 25° C. for 1 h. The mixture was extracted with diethyl ether and the ether layer was retained. The aqueous acid layer was neutralized and extracted with dichloromethane. The latter was combined with the ether extract and dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated to dryness to give 4-O-acetyl-α- and β-L-cladinose (1.86 g, 100%) as a colorless gum that was used without further purification.
