1.03 g of lithium hydroxide monohydrate are added to a solution of 7.0 g of ethyl 4,5-dichloro-6-formyl-1,3-benzodioxole-2-carboxylate in methanol under ice-cooling and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. Isopropyl ether is added to the reaction mixture and the resultant powdery materials are collected by filtration to give 6.48 g of lithium 4,5-dichloro-6-formyl-1,3-benzodioxole-2-carboxylate.
