3-Butyryl-4-(2-methylphenylamino)-8-hydroxyquinoline (3.2 g, 10 mmol) and potassium t-butoxide (5.0 g, 40 mmol) were stirred in dry dimethylformamide (100 ml) at 100° , then 4-(3-chloropropyl)morpholine hydrochloride (5 0 g, 14 mmol) was added. Heating was continued for 2.5 hours, then the mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ether. The combined extracts were dried and evaporated to an oily residue. Chromatography (silica gel, 3% methanolic ammonia in chloroform) and crystallisation from petroleum ether gave 3-butyryl-4-(2-methylphenylamino)-8-(3-morpholinopropoxy)quinoline (2.6 g, 58 %), m.p. 111°-113°.
