Procedure

0.14 g 2-carboethoxy-5-hydroxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-7-(4-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy)benzyloxy)-4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran and 0.78 g sodium bicarbonate are combined in 7 ml of water and 7 ml of ethanol and refluxed overnight. The mixture is extracted with ether and the aqueous neutralized to pH6. The resulting solid is collected, dried to give 2-carboxy-5-hydroxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-7-(4-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy)benzyloxy)-4-oxo-4H-1H-benzopyran; m.p. 195°-96° C.
