To a solution of the compound 15 (7.6 g, 16.9 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (228 ml) was added an aqueous solution (38 ml) of potassium osmate dihydrate (372 mg, 1.01 mmol), and sodium metaperiodate (14.5 g, 67.6 mmol) was further added, followed by stirring at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction solution was added to a vessel to which ethyl acetate (300 ml) and water (300 ml) had been added, while stirring. The organic layer was washed with water, a 5% aqueous sodium hydrogen sulfite solution and an aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution, and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the residue was washed with diethyl ether to obtain 3-benzyloxy-5-(4-fluoro-benzylcarbamoyl)-4-oxo-1-(2-oxo-ethyl)-1,4-dihydro-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester 16 (5.39 g, 71%) as a colorless crystal.
