1.44 g (15 mmol) of furan-2-carboxaldehyde and 7.5 g of molecular sieves 3 Å were added to a solution of 2.45 g (10 mmol) of 2-[3-(3-fluoro-benzyloxy)-phenyl]-ethylamine in 50 ml of dry ethanol. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 3 hours. The molecular sieves were filtered off and the solution was cooled to 5° C. 0.57 g (15 mmol) of NaBH4 was added under N2 and the reaction was stirred at room temperature overnight. Solvent was removed, a 5% NaHCO3 aqueous solution was added to the residue and the product was extracted with ethyl acetate. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography (dichloromethane/methanol/NH3 100:0:0→100:2:0.2, v:v:v). 2.2 g (68% yield) of an oil were obtained.
