Reaction Steps
To an amount of 56c (1.0 g, 5.15 mmole) of 3,5-diethoxybenzaldehyde dissolved in 10 mL of propanol, was added malononitrile (375 mg, 5.67 mmole) and 2 drops of sat. KOH. The mixture was stirred at r.t. for 10 mins. Precipitates was filtered to yield 1.0 g of 2-(3,5-diethoxybenzylidene)malononitrile (56d). MS [m+H] calc'd for C14H14N2O2, 243.11; found 243.11.
