A solution of 1.00 mmol of 5-hydroxy-5-(3H-imidazol-4-yl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene-2-carbonitrile (Example 2c1) and 10 mmol of ethyl mercaptoacetate [623-51-8] in 2 ml of trifluoroacetic acid is stirred at 70° C. for 24 hours. The reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature, poured into ice-water and neutralized with 4M sodium hydroxide solution. The mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate, and the combined organic phases are dried with sodium sulphate and evaporated. The title compound is identified from the residue on the basis of the Rf by flash chromatography (SiO2 60F).
