A mixture of 5-amino-1,5-dimethylbarbituric acid hydrochloride (0.31 g, 1.50 mmol), tetrafluorophthalic anhydride (0.40 g, 1.80 mmol) and Et3N (0.21 mL, 0.15 g, 1.50 mmol) in glacial AcOH (11 mL) was stirred under reflux for 3 hours. The yellow solution was then allowed to cool down to room temperature and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The oily residue was recrystallized from 70% EtOH to give 1,5-dimethyl-5-(tetrafluorophthalimido)-barbituric acid (19a) as white crystals.
