Procedure
Methanol (200 mL) and hydrochloric acid (22 mL of 6 N) were added to N4-(tert-butyl)-2-chloroquinoline-3,4-diamine (16.6 g, 66.5 mmol), and the reaction was heated overnight at 75° C. and concentrated under reduced pressure at 100° C. The solid residue was further dried under high vacuum for three hours and then mixed with diethyl ether. The solid was isolated by filtration, washed with diethyl ether, and dried under reduced pressure to provide 16.17 g of 2-chloroquinoline-3,4-diamine hydrochloride.
