Anhydrous potassium carbonate (50 mg, 0.36 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 1-(methoxymethyl)-2-[(5-methylpyridin-2-yl)amino]-2-oxoethyl acetate (Step 2) (1.10 g, 4.36 mmol) in MeOH (10 mL). The reaction mixture was kept at ambient temperature for 1 h before it was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified with column chromatography (silica gel, eluting with EtOAc) to give the title compound as a colourless solid (0.81 g), 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 9.39 (br s, 1H), 8.14 (d, 1H), 8.09 (d, 1H), 7.53 (dd, 1H), 4.92 (br s, 1H), 4.41 (dd, 1H), 3.75 (m, 2H), 3.42 (s, 3H), 2.30 (s, 3H).
