Procedure
To a solution of (39) (4 g, 24.7 mmol) in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) at −20° C. was dropwise added n-butyl lithium (1.6M in hexane, 18.5 mL, 29.6 mmol). The stirred mixture was allowed to warm room temperature over 4 h and then cooled to −20° C. again. To this solution was added slowly a solution of n-butyraldehyde (2.7 mL, 29.6 mmol) in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (10 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred for 16 h between −20° C. and room temperature. The reaction was quenched with saturated ammonium chloride solution and the mixture extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated and dried over Na2SO4; After removing the solvent under reduced pressure, flash column chromatography of the residue on silica gel, eluting with 5% ethyl acetate/hexane provided 5 g (85%) of the title compound as a yellow oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): δ 0.96 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 3H), 1.11 (d, J=6.8, Hz, 3H), 1.17 (d, J=6.8 Hz, 3H), 1.42-1.52 (m, 2H), 1.76 (m, 1H), 1.87-1.95 (m, 2H), 2.04 (m, 2H), 2.62 (m, 4H), 2.94 (m, 2H), 4.03 (d, J=5.2 Hz, 1H).
