Reaction Steps

Ethyl chloroformate (2.66 g., 24.47 mmole) is added by syringe to N-allylformamide (2.08 g., 24.47 mmole) in a dry flask under N2. The resulting mixture is then stirred at 25° C., for 2 hours during which time CO2 is rapidly evolved. The reaction mixture is then heated to 45° C. until no further evolution of gas is evident (2 hours). The viscous product is then cooled and held at a vacuum of 0.2 mm for 2 hours to remove all volatiles.
