N-(5-Cyanomethoxy-2-methylphenyl)-methanesulfonamide (3.48 g) was dissolved in a mixture of 70 ml of dichloromethane and 3.5 ml of ethanol. The reaction mixture was cooled in an ice bath, saturated with hydrogen chloride gas (Matheson, Newark, Calif.), and slowly allowed to come to room temperature and kept there for 16 hours. The solvent was evaporated leaving 5.2 g of 2-(4-methyl-3-methanesulfonylaminophenoxy)-acetimidic acid ethyl ester hydrochloride. ##STR77##
