Ethyl 4-[N-(2-(2-benzyloxyphenyl)ethyl)-N-ethylamino]benzoate was dissolved in a solution of methanol (20 ml) and tetrahydrofuran (20 ml). To this solution was added aqueous 2N sodium hydroxide (10.5 ml) and the mixture heated at reflux for 24 hours; cooled and the volume reduced by evaporation to half the original volume. Water (20 ml) was added and the mixture acidified with acetic acid. The resulting solid was filtered and dried under vacuum at 60° C. to give the title product (950 mg) m.p. 175° C.
